If you’ve ever jailbroken a smartphone, you’re more than prepared to free your Kindle from those pesky little ads.Here’s our guide in four easy steps.This guide is for Windows and assumes you have Windows 7.Most of the steps will still be the same in Windows Vista or older versions but will have some occasional twists.Let’s get down to it!If you already show hidden files and folders in Windows, skip on to Step 2.In Windows, click Start, then go to the Control Panel.Click Appearance and Personalization then  Folder Options.Click over to the View tab, and under Advanced Settings make sure “Show hidden files, folders and drives” is checked.Once that box is checked, click OK and close the Control Panel window.Using the USB cable included, plug your Kindle into your computer.Under your Computer, you’ll see the Kindle appear like an additional hard drive.On the Kindle, double-click the system folder to open it.In that folder, delete the folder called .assets.If you don’t see .assets, repeat Step 1.

We want to make a new folder called .assets to replace the old one, but Windows won’t let you make a folder with a period at the start.We’ll do it in a roundabout way.Right-click inside the system folder and choose New > Text Document.Leave the name alone and just let it be called New Text Document.txt.Now comes the tricky part.While holding Shift, right-click inside the system folder and choose Open Command Window Here.At the command prompt, enter rename “New Text Document.txt” .assets and hit Enter.Close the Command Window, and back inside the system folder you should see that the New Text Document.txt file from before is gone.Your new Kindle should now fail to connect wirelessly to grab new ads.You may occasionally see an error message like the one in the image below, but only when the device is in its sleeping screensaver mode.Be warned that this workaround could be removed in a future Kindle device update.As our guide shows, it’s a pretty simple hack to remove ads.That means that it’s also a simple fix for the computer-whiz programmers who work for Amazon.
