Read moreDont show me this againSelecting this option will display news from all of our communities in Texas.Frisco is snuffing out smoking at all city parks after a split vote on Tuesday.The Frisco City Council voted 3-2 to tighten its smoking ordinance to better protect the health of its residents.The ordinance includes a ban not only on smoking but also on e-cigarettes and all liquid nicotine products in its parks.The ban does not include chewing tobacco, which was also an option discussed Tuesday.“It floors me that as a community we have not restricted the use of smoking in our parks,” said council member Scott Johnson, who noted that he has made this issue a priority.He said the negative health effects of second-hand smoke are well-documented.e cigarette edryHe believes children at sporting events shouldn’t be exposed to smoke from adults on the sidelines.Council member Jeff Cheney said that with three kids playing sports in city parks almost daily, he’s noticed an increasing problem with tobacco.

There are people smoking in the stands, cigarette butts littering the ground, and chewing tobacco getting spit on the fields.“It does create a nuisance that the city has to clean up,” he said.Frisco is not alone in its new ordinance.It joins the neighboring cities of Prosper and McKinney in banning smoking in all city parks.The American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation lists 965 other cities nationwide that also ban smoking in all city parks or specifically named city parks.Dallas still allows smoking in its city parks.Frisco council members Tim Nelson and Will Sowell voted against the measure.“I don’t want to be too Big Brotherish about it,” Sowell said.He opposed the measure because smoking is a legal activity.A person picnicking at the park should have the right to smoke a cigarette, he said.Sowell suggested that the council restrict smoking from a certain distance, such as 100 feet of playgrounds or seating areas to protect others who don’t smoke.But that idea got no traction.Nelson said he favored the smoking ban for tobacco products but didn’t believe e-cigarettes should be included in the park ban.Frisco changed its no-smoking ordinance in February to treat e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products just like cigarettes.
