CTCA March 10, 2016 E-cigarettes are a smoking-hot $3 billion business in the United States. In fact, data shows that, for the first time, e-cigarette use has outpaced every other tobacco product, including regular cigarettes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Even more troubling, considering their documented health risks, e-cigarettes have become the most popular nicotine product used by teens, and the majority of adult smokers have tried them, the American Lung Association has reported. These vogue nicotine products, which hit the market in 2007, come in many forms—as pipes, hookahs, cigarettes, pens.Because they involve inhaling a heated aerosol vapor rather than tobacco, many users mistakenly believe they are a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. But a recent study by researchers at Harvard adds to the growing scientific literature suggesting that the battery-operated products contain chemicals linked to severe respiratory disease. The study also found two other potentially harmful compounds in the tested flavors, which were marketed under names like “cotton candy” and “cupcake,” believed by some to be intended to appeal to young people.

“E-cigarettes have no redeeming qualities,” says Dr. Laeeq Shamsuddin, Pulmonologist at our hospital near Chicago.“In fact, they may actually be worse than regular cigarettes.” Dr. Shamsuddin says that, unlike conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes pose a hidden danger that may even exceed concerns around inhaling nicotine—they require breathing in chemicals like propylene glycol.“Propylene glycol can be safe, but when it’s broken down, it can turn into formaldehyde, a known Group 1 carcinogen,” Dr. Shamsuddin says.“Studies show e-cigarettes can potentially expose users to five times more formaldehyde than traditional cigarettes.” The Center for Environmental Health recently tested 97 e-cigarette products and found formaldehyde and the chemical acetaldehyde in more than half of them.E-cigarette vapor may also contain lead, cadmium, nickel, tin and other metals, which have been linked to some nervous system and respiratory disorders. And some flavoring chemicals, such as those used to make cinnamon flavor, may be toxic.

E-cigarettes work by turning chemicals, including highly addictive nicotine, into an inhalable aerosol.A typical battery-operated e-cigarette contains a cartridge of liquid, or juice, which usually contains nicotine and propylene glycol. The juices come in an array of flavors.Inhaling e-cigarettes is commonly called "vaping," but according to the National Cancer Institute, the units emit an aerosol that may contain potentially toxic chemicals.According to the CDC, the aerosol is not safe for either the user or any bystanders who may breathe in second-hand vapor. But e-cigarette makers, and some users, say the devices help smokers quit. The American Lung Association disagrees, reporting that instead of quitting, many e-cigarette users are continuing to smoke conventional cigarettes in addition to vaping. In 2013, nearly 77 percent of those who recently used e-cigarettes also smoked conventional cigarettes. It’s a pattern Dr. Shamsuddin has seen in his some of his own patients.“In the past, they were smoking 20 cigarettes a day,” he says.

“Now, while using e-cigarettes, they are only smoking 10 a day.

That could change soon. The FDA has issued a proposed rule to include e-cigarettes under its authority to regulate certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products.
