Last week, the Centers for Disease Control released data showing that twice as many middle and high school students tried electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, in 2012 over the previous year.These battery-operated devices look like regular cigarettes but instead of burning tobacco, a device inside heats a liquid that turns into a nicotine-containing vapor that resembles smoke.The companies that make e-cigarettes promote them as a cigarette alternatives as well as a way for tobacco smokers to wean themselves from smoking.Recent trials that compared e-cigarettes with nicotine patches found that both methods result in comparable success in quitting, with roughly similar proportions of smokers who used either method abstaining from smoking for six months after a 13-week course of patches or e-cigarettes.Companies that make e-cigarettes claim they are not marketing to young people.But teens have easy access to these products: they are readily available online and in shopping malls, says the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Because the adolescent brain is more susceptible to nicotine addiction, health officials are concerned that e-cigarette use could be a gateway to increased tobacco use among teens.The FDA has done only limited testing to assess the levels of nicotine and other chemicals that the various brands of e-cigarettes deliver to the user.There is good news, however, for teens who want to break a nicotine habit.Recommendations from the U.S.Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement (USPSTF) recently released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) conclude that teen smokers can benefit from behavioral counseling with a health care professional either face to face or by phone, along with reading materials, computer applications and videos.Adolescent well-care exams are important opportunities too, says Alan Chang, MD,  of Palo Verde Pediatrics in Gilbert.“I will ask lots of questions of teens — whether they have a girlfriend or boyfriend, whether they use drugs and also whether they are exposed to any smoking,” says Chang, a member of the AAP’s Arizona chapter (AzAAP).
