Level Contributor Ha, I think people who say 'douchey' are a bit douchey ;) Thanks for your comments.I won't worry about it.Level Contributor It's definitely more tolerated and less stigmatized than smoking in spite of the law treating them the same.People do it discretely in bars, at work, etc.It seems there's now a vape store on every other corner of the East Village.Level Contributor Yeah, it's nothing to stress out about.Level Contributor It is definitely NOT more acceptable to vape rather than smoke cigarettes and you cannot use e cigarettes inside bars,restaurants,no smoking hotel rooms,parks and anywhere else smoking is prohibited.You may have an opinion on vaping and second hand smoke but this is still being investigated.You can vape on the street,same as smoking but put them away inside Level Contributor Question.If the laws are the same for cigarettes & e-cigs then how can this be?<> Just curious.

Then, last month, they voted 3-2 to nix all smoking inside and outside apartment and condominium complexes with three or more attached units.Common areas and outdoor spaces are included in that ban, which will roll out during an 18-month implementation period.If the latest law, approved on Tuesday, is finalized with a second reading on Dec.1, tobacco retailers would have to obtain city permits at an annual cost of several hundred dollars.Tobacco products flavored with anything other than mint or menthol would have to be removed from shelves, and everyone who appears less than 30 years old would have to be carded.Permits must also be “conspicuously” displayed, according to the ordinance.The legislation’s ultimate goal is to keep minors from getting access to the unhealthy products.“The city shall check each retailer at least twice per 12-month period to determine whether the retailer is conducting business that complies with laws regulating youth access to tobacco products or electronic smoking devices,” the ordinance states.It also would give the city the opportunity to revoke or suspend a license “if a store violates the law twice in a three-year period.”Local tobacco sellers recoiled at the proposal during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s council meeting.

Many were concerned with a decreased profit margin if they could no longer sell flavored tobacco products.“Speedi Mart is my retirement,” said owner Aamir Bhamani of the Aviation Boulevard business.“To devalue the store would destroy my investment and retirement.”But council members were not swayed.With Mayor Mark Burton at the helm, the deliberative process took less than an hour.“Look, what we’re really trying to do is stop the kids from smoking,” said Councilman Tony D’Errico, who did not want to pass an ordinance that would shut down any businesses.“Let’s just do more stings,” D’Errico suggested.The new law would require stores selling tobacco to be at least 500 feet away from schools and each other (with an exception grandfathered in for two businesses on Artesia Boulevard near Aviation Boulevard).It would not force any existing stores to close or completely give up cigarette sales.“Studies have shown that the density of tobacco retailers, particularly in neighborhoods surrounding schools, has been associated with increased smoking rates and that one-third of illegal tobacco sales take place within 1,000 feet of schools,” an American Lung Association statement read.
