Background and AimsIn addition to some electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), new heat-not-burn tobacco products Ploom and iQOS have recently begun to be sold by tobacco companies.These products are regulated differently in Japan, depending on whether the contents are liquid or tobacco leaf.Our objective was to estimate percentages of awareness and use of e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco products among the Japanese population, including minors.Design and SettingAn internet survey (randomly sampled research agency panellists) with a propensity score adjustment for “being a respondent in an internet survey” using a nationally representative sample in Japan.ParticipantsA total of 8240 respondents aged 15–69 years in 2015 (4084 men and 4156 women).MeasurementsAdjusted percentages of awareness and use of e-cigarettes (nicotine or non-nicotine e-cigarettes) and heat-not-burn products among total participants; product types and percentages ever used among e-cigarettes ever users.FindingsOf respondents in Japan, 48% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 47–49] were aware of e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco products, 6.6% (95% CI = 6.1–7.1) had ever used, 1.3% (95% CI = 1.0–1.5) had used in the last 30 days and 1.3% (95% CI = 1.1–1.6) had experience of > 50 sessions.
Seventy-two per cent (95% CI = 69–76) of ever users used non-nicotine e-cigarettes, while 33% (95% CI = 30–37) of them used nicotine e-cigarettes, which has the majority share world-wide; 7.8% (95% CI = 5.5–10.0) and 8.4% (95% CI = 6.1–10.7) of them used the new devices, Ploom and iQOS, respectively, with a relatively higher percentage among the younger population.ConclusionsApproximately half the respondents in a Japanese internet survey were aware of e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco products, 6.6% had ever used.More than 70% of ever users used non-nicotine e-cigarettes, the sale of which is not legally prohibited, even to minors, in Japan, and 33% of them used nicotine e-cigarettes; 3.5% of never smoking men and 1.3% of never smoking women had ever used e-cigarettes.Corresponding figures for use in the last 30 days were 0.6% and 0.3%, predominantly non-nicotine e-cigarettes.Continue reading full articleInt J Environ Res Public Health.doi: 10.3390/ijerph14020202.Hirano T1, Tabuchi T2, Nakahara R3, Kunugita N4, Mochizuki-Kobayashi Y5.Author information1Center for Cancer Control and Information Services/Center for Public Health Sciences, National Cancer Center, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan.

We conducted an online survey to collect information on tobacco use, difficulties in smoking cessation, socio-demographic factors, and health-related factors in Japan.Among the total participants (n = 9055), 798 eligible persons aged 20-69 years who smoked within the previous five years were analyzed to assess the relationship between the outcome of smoking cessation and quitting methods used, including e-cigarettes, smoking cessation therapy, and unassisted.e cigarette oshaE-cigarette use was negatively associated with smoking cessation (odds ratio (OR) = 0.632; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.414-0.964) after adjusting for gender, age, health-related factors, and other quitting methods.e cigarette ocadoConversely, smoking cessation therapy (i.e., varenicline) was significantly associated with smoking cessation (OR = 1.885; 95% CI = 1.018-3.492) in the same model.e-cigarette over the counter

The vaping industry is at the heart of a new economic sector that spans the manufacturing, production and retailing of both devices and e-liquids.A new field of technical activity dedicated to vape and vapour products aims to address the emerging standardization needs in that sector.To this end, a new ISO subcommittee, ISO/TC 126, Tobacco and tobacco products, SC 3, Vape and vapour products, has been created and will hold its first meeting in the week of 24 October 2016 in Osaka, Japan.The e-cigarette market’s wide range of devices and e-liquids, its significant market value, the arrival of many brand-new market players and stakeholders, and the public policies involved, will provide the basis for discussion at this opening session.The committee work programme will focus on the following points: Safety and quality requirements for electronic cigarette devices and e-liquids Test methods for devices and e-liquids Determination of substances in e-liquids Testing conditions, equipment, reference products, emissions, vaping machines and robots User information and services provided by retailing A number of countries have already issued standards on e-cigarettes and vape and vapour products.
It all began in April 2015 when France published the first voluntary standards aiming to improve the safety of electronic cigarettes and e-liquids.The United Kingdom soon followed in its wake, helping to build European momentum in the summer of 2015, which materialized with the launch of a project involving more than 20 countries within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).Today, the market for e-cigarettes reaches far beyond Europe’s frontiers.Fivape, the French Interprofessional Vaping Federation, estimates the number of vapers at 25 million worldwide.For Rémi Parola, Chair of ISO/TC 126/SC 3, whose secretariat is held by AFNOR, the ISO member for France, “achieving a strong level of consensus within ISO validates an approach seeking to establish specific standards on vape and vapour products.Creating an ad hoc ISO technical committee should help recognize the potential of this fast-growing innovation, for the benefit of users throughout the world”.To date, 17 countries, through their respective national standards bodies, have already indicated a wish to participate in standardization work.
