Kory Zelickson is the chief operating officer of (CSE:N), the world’s largest international online vaporizer retailer. The company carries a wide range of vaporizers targeting the “dried herb” market. We spoke to him about advances in vaporizer technology, the prospect of going public and what legalization could mean for his company.Kory, thanks for joining us today.Kory, why don’t you tell us what it is that Namaste Technologies does?So Namaste Technologies originally when we started out, we were primarily a retailer of online vaporizers.Over the past we’ve developed a niche in sort of an online international distribution network, so we’re able to sell products and we have Namaste Vapes brand sites in about 26 countries and nine languages. So we have staff speaking every language in each country, and with Namaste Vapes, we sell premium portable loose-leaf vaporizers for dry herbs. There’s a lot of really reputable brands on the market, so we carry all the high end brands and we retail them all over primarily outside of the U.S.

So our primary market is for international sales, and we’ve been growing, and over the past year we started out with really no knowledge in the business and went to about US$3.4 million in sales in the first year.So it blew out from under us and we’ve grown really quickly with the online retail side, and over the past year we’ve really focused on also developing some of our own products and our own vaporizers as well.So when you say ‘vaporizers’ and you say you’re vaporizing herbs, what herb is it that you might be referring to specifically? So on our website, of course, with all the regulations between each countries, and keeping in mind that we’re selling primarily into Europe, we do market the products for aromatherapy purposes. So we actually sell lavender and chamomile and eucalyptus and mint leaves on the website, organically grown in California. But of course, the end use of the product is up to the user, but we’ve heard that it’s used for other types of cannabis-related products as well of course, and that’s really – That’s just a rumour, though.

That’s just a rumour.Okay, well that’s good. What we’re trying to get at here is, are you, is your revenue going to be driven in some part by the advent of the end of prohibition of marijuana for recreational purposes? So the really nice thing about our business, and we’re going public next week, and in speaking with the investors that we’ve been meeting with, there’s a lot of companies that have been involved in this industry or companies that have gone public have been those that are involved directly in like manufacturing or production of marijuana. In those cases, those companies really ultimately are limited jurisdictionally and they’re governed by different laws.If you’re investing into a grow-op in Colorado, you can only produce and sell within the state, and likewise in Canada you’re really limited that way as well.So our products, what’s kind of unique about it is that our vaporizers are legal everywhere. So it’s a play into the same industry, the marijuana industry, but in a way that there’s no barriers to entry into any new markets for us.

So we can expand internationally without running into any hurdles that way, so it’s sort of, I would say, a safer approach, and it’s a peripheral — you know, it’s like selling coffee machines instead of the coffee.Subscribe to James West’s Midas Letter for premium insights into Canadian investments Midas Letter is a monthly journal profiling Canadian emerging companies with best-in-class potential in all sectors.Subscribe today Well, I want to ask you about this, Kory — you’re going public, so you’ve been very happy with the trajectory of the company, and in saying that, let’s talk about the financial condition right now: cash on hand, your revenue per quarter, your profitability, etc. Right. So basically in the process of going public, we did audited financial statements up until September of last year, so the first year we were looking at $3.4 million US sales with a 444,000 pre-tax earnings. So we’ve stayed on pace with that as well; we’ve just filed a new quarter as well that’s going in with the listing statements, and our plans for expansion are going to be into providing organic and non-organic growth.

So we’re going to be looking at some M&A opportunities in the very near future, as well as launching of our own manufactured products and by distributing them into our own network as well.So that’s sort of our position where we’re at now, and we did, in going public, we did a private placement to raise funds to allow us to expand our inventory levels in each location, provide additional marketing and production of the vaporizer that we’re just launching right now, I’ve worked on it for about a year and half personally. So we’re just in the process of launching that now, and we’re expecting that to add substantially to our revenue stream as well.So tell us a little bit about the ownership structure; how much is owned by insiders, how much by retail investors, how much will be institutional? So right now we’re going to have about 60 million shares outstanding after a consolidation with the public shell and about 60 per cent of that is going to be owned by insiders, so between myself and my partner, and some of our partners that were involved with us from the beginning, we’re going to have over a good portion of the public company shares.

And so what are the main milestones that investors should keep their eyes peeled for, that will represent successful execution of your business plan?So our business plan is basically going to involve several sort of multifaceted approach that we’re taking. We never entered into the U.S.market when we first launched our brand, and that was based on our experience in the past and also the fact that the market for this industry sort of follows from the U.S.and then it goes overseas, so there’s a lot of very big players in the vaporizer and e-cigarette business in the U.S.It is differentiation to make as well between e-cigs, which are typically used for nicotine juices that people are wanting to quit smoking, that’s most often what you see around, and then vaporizers, which are for dry herbs or for waxes and concentrates which are becoming more popular now.So these sort of technologies evolve in the U.S.naturally and then it grows the market for them internationally. So for us, when we started out, we started growing internationally; we started focusing on Europe, we grew really quickly, and we’re now well established on the European side of the market.

But in launching our own products, because over the past year we’ve become one of the best clients with several distributors, and we have great relationships in the U.S.as a customer of some of these companies, with the launch of our own products, we’re actually separating it out.So we have one retail brand called Namaste Vapes, and then one manufacturing brand that’s just going to be called Grizzly Originals. So those custom OEM products that we’re producing our new vaporizer, we’re going to back channel into the U.S.market through the relationships that we have with existing distributors. So that’s one major approach and a milestone for us, is the launch of the Guru which is starting right now, and we’re having amazing feedback on it.So our next production run of those comes in, we have 1,000 on order that are going to come in in the next few weeks, so we’ll be launching that.As well, expansion into new markets: we’ve really locked down the European market, Australia and New Zealand are the next biggest markets for us that are still growing, but we’re going to be pushing to expand into South, Central America, for example Brazil and Mexico, which have proven to be very good markets for us from our initial testing.

That’s going to be a major focus, as well as getting our products into physical stores, and we’re also looking at a broad scope.I can say that we’re looking at some strategic relationships in our M&A pipeline for some possible opportunities there as well, and there are quite a few of them in this industry too.And it’s typically because you find a lot of people that are involved in this business that we’re in, especially from a manufacturing perspective, a lot of these guys have developed awesome products, they are based out of California or Colorado, they developed a really cool vaporizer, it took off, but ultimately in the long term growth plan of these companies, they really don’t have sort of the same management abilities to grow the businesses. So there’s a lot of opportunities in the M&A area for a business like us.We have very well put together management team with a background in e-commerce, logistics and imports; I’m an electrical engineer, my business partner specializes in logistics and marketing, we’ve got the corporate finance side behind us as well, and you know, we’re going into this properly funded.

So that’s sort of our short-term growth strategy for the time being. There’ll be hopefully some news in the near future coming out, and we’re really looking forward to it.You’re listening to the Midas Letter Presented by the Financial Post, with publisher James West.I’m Andrew Crystal, and Kory Zelickson is the COO and CTO of Namaste Vapes and Namaste Technologies, who joins us.Let’s talk about your competitors. Are they a threat to you?Like I said, in the U.S.there’s some very big players in our space, and initially we went into Europe and launched. It’s a little bit unique, because a lot of businesses that operate overseas or in any country for that matter generally are one centralized site, so if you had a site based in the U.K., you’d be selling to U.K.customers and maybe you would sell to people in Germany or France that would order off of your U.K.But we have sort of a different strategy; so we actually have an individual website in every single country. So if it’s in Germany, we have a website fully translated in German, we have German sales agents that answer the phone and provide customer service and support.

So what happened was, in terms of the competition, we sort of used our strategy and came out of the gates launching multiple sites simultaneously when we first came out, and I think we took a lot of people off guard in the industry. But we’ve stuck it out and we worked really hard, and we have massively grown the business now. When you look at, there’s a third party independent review site called Trustpilot, it’s a very important site and it speaks to the quality of the customer service and the experience. We now have nearly 1,000 independent reviews in Europe, and they’re all, we have a 9.8 rating out of 10, so by far the best customer experience in the industry. So in terms of competition, to answer the question, I really think we’ve blown a lot of it out of the water, to be really honest, in Europe, and our big focus going forward is going to be to continue to expand internationally and also to focus on growth in the U.S.Where do you manufacture, Kory?So we started out manufacturing a lot of glass accessories, so we found when we first started, there was one vaporizer called the Pinnacle that came out and it was wildly popular, but the quality of the product was not great, so there would be lots of warranty problems.

We ended up having to pull it off of our sites for that reason. But they made this little glass bubbler piece, and it’s a small little water tool that you can filter your vapour through water. So they had a little mouthpiece on their vaporizer that would connect to it, and then you could put it through water and cool off the vapour, and people were buying this thing just for that. And those were very expensive glass pieces. So we started out with our manufacturing in this business building a name for ourselves making these hydro tubes and water tools. So we’ve sourced really good factories in China for that, and we’re really tight on the quality, and our branding and packaging is amazing. So those products are manufactured in China and then the Guru vaporizer, which we’ve been developing as a brand new — it’s a really revolutionary vaporizer as well on the market — we designed that here in our office, you know, I bought a 3D printer and we were printing off parts in the office here to design it, and ultimately took the prototype to China and worked with our factory there to develop it into a production level of model that we could properly produce in volume.
