Knowing where you are and what you do on a daily basis is incredibly valuable to advertisers and merchants looking to sell the next “x because you where at x.” Knowing your location also makes apps and iOS smarter, which ultimately makes the experience of using your iPhone more seamless. If you’ve had Location Services turned on, then you’ve already been giving Apple permission to silently track your every move.A new setting in iOS 7 called “Frequent Locations” makes how and to what level you are tracked more transparent, right down to the minute you left your house yesterday.Buried in Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services -> Frequent Locations lies an eerily detailed history of where you’ve been. There’s even a nice map view. You can drill down individually into different trips to see exactly when you, say, arrived at and left from that one park two weeks ago. After using iOS 7 on my main iPhone 5 since June, I can see everything from when I went to the doctor earlier this week to where I stayed in Florida earlier this summer.

Unfortunately, we cannot control the GPS signal and we are aware that sometimes it takes a while to get a signal. Many phones have trouble getting a GPS signal indoors, so it often helps to go outside.High buildings and poor weather conditions can result in unstable GPS coverage. If the problem persists, check your GPS settings in the phone, as described below, and reboot your phone afterwards.Treadmill, Indoor Cycling, Swimming or Elliptical Training Please note that if you're using one of the above sports, the app cannot track your distance because you're physically remaining in the same place. If you are using one of these sports, you can add the workout manually by going to "History" and tapping the Enter New Workout button. You can then enter the workout details from the computer on the treadmill. If you are using a HRM and would like to keep track of your heart-rate you will of course need to track live during the workout., browse to the relevant workout, click on the arrow icon on the upper right corner of the map and click on "Edit" to enter the distance.
We do plan to add the option to disable GPS for these sports in the future.Fix route after incorrect trackingAt the moment we don't have a feature to edit the workout directly on the workout map.The first thing you can do to try to fix the workout is to export and import the workout: Go to the Workout > More Options > Export it to a .tcx file > go to "New Workout" > Import from file > import the file you just exported. That will make the server recalculate the available raw-data.Alternatively workaround Please note that this workaround will mean that there will be no lap times in the new workout.Unfortunately there is no way of restoring the workout exactly, if it has been deleted. -> New Workout -> Draw Route on Map.After you have drawn your workout, you can enter details such as sport, time and notes.Using this method, you will unfortunately not get lap times, but the workout will be included in your statistics and any challenges you might be participating in.Merge two workouts (if app crashed in the middle of a workout)If you experience the app crashing in the middle of your workout and you started a new workout for the rest of the track, you can merge the two workouts.
Turn on GPS on the phone AndroidOn Android phones you need to make sure that Location services are enabled in the settings.Settings > Location > Enable GPS satellites and Wireless networks/Google Location Services.Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.GPS) in general has to be set to "On" and it must be enabled for Endomondo as well.Often Location Services is disabled for third party apps like ours.By tapping on Location Services you can individually choose which apps have GPS enabled, be sure GPS is on for Endomondo.Go to Options > Advanced Options > GPS (it could also be: Options > Device > Location Settings) and try to check the settings, GPS Data Source = Device GPS, GPS Service = Location ON, Location Aiding = Enabled (sometimes it helps to disable Location Aiding). You can also try to refresh your GPS position. When in GPS settings, press the BB/Menu button and choose Refresh GPS.Your phone will now refresh the satellite positions and provide you with your current position (latitude and longitude). If it does not work, try it again somewhere else where there might be a better chance to get a satellite signal.
If it does work but your GPS still doesn’t work in the Endomondo app, check your network connection settings.Go to Settings > select Location > and make sure Location services is On.Each platform has many different phones so GPS settings could be in another spot other than what is described above. For more details about GPS on your phone, please see the user manual for your phone.Google Maps can find my location but Endomondo can’t Endomondo app requires GPS data.Your position will be located by Google Maps even if you turn off GPS – simply based on signal from cellular towers, if you have enabled WiFi or Data Connection. The location data acquired this way is however, not sufficient for tracking with the Endomondo app.I cannot get a GPS fix or it takes a long time General Double check in your phone settings if you have GPS turned on.Try to stay still while waiting for a lock.Turning the data connection on also helps to get a GPS fix faster (mobile network position info is helping to locate you).
Another option that can interfere with the distance is the Auto-Pause feature. If you use auto-pause then the distance will vary more, due to the many pauses. The application needs a few seconds to detect that you are not moving and when you are moving again, which can cut off a few meters every time there is a pause. If you can't get a GPS fix on the iPhone, the following has been know to work. Please note that by doing this saved network VPN's will be removed.AndroidAndroid phones use what is called Assisted GPS (AGPS) to determine your location.AGPS uses not only GPS satellites but also nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi networks to lock onto your phone. You want to make sure you have this feature enabled on your phone. To do so, head to Settings > Location & Security and make sure both "Use Wireless Networks and "Use GPS Satellites are checked.By default, your phone only uses GPS satellites, so adding wireless networks should help quite a bit.If you still cannot get a fix, try to take one of these steps: Reboot the phone, carry out a 'battery pull', or reinstall the app and sign back in.
Android GPS Toolbox If you're still having trouble, head to Google Play Store and download GPS Status & Toolbox.Essentially, this app lets you flush and re-download your AGPS data, which can help re-acquire the correct satellites. So here's what you need to do: Download GPS Status & Toolbox.Distance vary on same route/is different to my friends’ phoneThe GPS hardware in the phones can differ from phone to phone. Some phones are better at picking up the satellite signals and pinpointing the actual position and are therefore, more accurate than others. It is always possible that wrong track points will be picked up by the phone. To minimize the error margin, we filter all track points to remove as many errors as possible. In general, distance tracked by GPS should only vary within 0-2% if there is a good satellite signal.GPS influence on the battery life of the phoneThe battery consumption varies a lot from phone to phone and it depends on how many other applications and services you are using at the same time.
For instance, it often helps significantly to turn off Bluetooth, WiFi and other services if you are not using them. Most new phones can track with the GPS on for 4-6 hours before recharging, whereas the best phones can track for up to 12 hours before recharging.A battery that has been used a lot will often drain faster, so it might help to get a new battery. If you’re a Premium member on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry 10 you can use Low Power Mode. You can read more about low power mode here.Cost of using Endomondo abroad/on vacation You can safely use Endomondo to track your workouts while you are on vacation abroad.Just remember to put your phone in "flight mode".Endomondo does not need an active data connection to track your workouts - only connection to the GPS.You can then open Endomondo once you are back in the wifi coverage of the hotel, to upload the workout. Please note that features such as pep talks and live tracking won't work when data connection is off.‘Low Power Mode’ influence on GPS accuracyGPS accuracy is the same regardless if the feature “Low Power Mode” is enabled or disabled.
Actual battery saved on Low Power Mode may vary from phone to phone. However, the data is uploaded to the website a lot less often.Low Power Mode is only available on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry.Average speed is too low on my workoutIf your average speed is lower than it should be on the Workout Summary, it can be because you forgot to stop the Endomondo Tracker correctly after a workout or that it was registered wrong.Click “Training” in the green menu bar, find the faulty workout in the calendar and hit the “Edit” button above the upper right hand corner of the map.Enter the correct time for the workout and hit “Save”.After editing/deleting a workout your average speed will be recalculated.Max speed is too high on workoutThe max speed shown is too high on my workout details, but on the graph it looks alright, why is this? The speed is calculated from the track points we collect through the GPS.But since GPS is not 100 % accurate it can pick up track points that are a bit off.
This will mean that the GPS thinks you have moved farther than you have, which results in a higher max speed. We try to filter out these track points to get a more accurate route and speed, but this is not always possible. The max speed can look very high sometimes, but the average speed should still be correct as the max speed error is only in accordance with one track point. On the workout graph we are able to smooth out some of the speed peaks, but this does not apply for the max speed reading in the workout detail box.The way the graph points are generated is different from the way the Max Speed is calculated (in the box on the left-hand side of the map), so there could be some discrepancies between these two figures.Total ascended/descended elevation - calculation methodTo calculate the total ascended and descended elevation we sum up all the ascents and descents the GPS picks up while tracking. The Altitude field on the Workout shows the minimum and maximum altitude for your workout. The Elevation field shows the total ascended and descended elevation during the workout.
