One wire is used as a core (usually the lower gauge wire), while the higher gauge wire is wrapped around the outside.The end result is something like this, which closely resembles a guitar string (which evidently is where its name came from, Eric Clapton anyone?).What are the benefits of Clapton coils?Basically, the theory behind a clapton coil is to add more surface area without actually lowering the resistance of the coil.What you get in the end is a coil that retains the resistance of the core wire, but is overall much larger in diameter.Think of it like this, you have two pieces of wire: 1 and 2 1: Your basic plain jane 24gauge wire 2: clapton wire with a 24gauge core, and 34gauge outer shell Cut an equal length of #1 and #2, and you will notice the resistance is about the same, yet the diameter of #2 is larger, which also in turn means it has more surface area than #1.So what does this mean?This means at the same overall length of wire, you are getting the same resistance.

Sure it adds to the surface area, but the added mass will require much more heat from the 24g core to heat the 26g shell (more wattage needed).alivi8 portable vaporizer reviewAs you raise the gauge of the outer core, the mass is reduced, which in turn requires less heat from the 24g core to be able to heat up the outer wire.vicks vaporizer aucklandThere is a certain sweetspot for each wattage setting, and it gets more complicated here, but basically for the certain power you want to vape at, there is a certain type of clapton coil you want to build (a certain core + a certain gauge shell) to be able to take advantage of a clapton coil.The main issue I see in people who "Don't get clapton coils" or say "I see no difference between claptons vs traditional coils", are that they are using the wrong wire and/or at the wrong settings.
With smaller clapton coils such as 28g/32g+, I have found they work well at lower wattage (depending on how large you coil it).Larger claptons like 24g/32g+ work well at higher wattages.Much like with traditional coils, higher gauge wire works at lower watts, while lower gauge wire is best for higher watts.The problem comes when the gauge difference between the coils is not significant enough.For example a 24g/28g clapton would not be ideal at any wattage because at lower wattage, you are not pushing enough power through the core to heat the outer wire in a timely manner, leading to a 'wispy' vape.You would need much more power for the 24g core to heat up the 28g shell quick, but the issue we get when we do that is you are putting so much power through the core just to heat up the shell that you end up with an uncomfortably hot vape (you notice how hot it is visually once you let off the button, the coil continues to vaporize juice even after, due to the heat, I'm sure some of you have noticed this) .
