Nicholas Ethier just opened his e-cigarette shop on Dalhousie Street in April, but he could soon face restrictions on promoting what many believe is a healthier alternative to smoking tobacco.The owner of Electronic Cigarettes Ottawa said he may be rethinking his business plan after the Ontario government made moves to treat e-cigarettes like regular smokes.Under the omnibus Making Healthier Choices Act, businesses that sell the liquid nicotine inhalers would not be allowed to advertise their products or sell to youth under 19 years old.E-cigarette advocates say the vaporizers are healthier because they contain liquid nicotine without harmful additives found in cigarettes.Users are also inhaling mist – or “vaping” – rather than smoking.“Hundreds of people come to my shop saying, oh they’ve quit (smoking), they reduced drastically,” said Ethier.Davis Holly, the owner of Ottawa’s Smoke FX shops, says he does not need a law to tell him he should not sell vaporizers to youth.

But he still argues inhalers are safer than the pack of smokes a teenager might swipe from her parents.“Activists who don’t like smoking are seeing people vaping and they’re putting the association to smoking, when there’s no comparison,” he said.“They’re not the same thing at all.” Under this proposed new law, e-cigarette users will also not be allowed to “vape” in public settings.University of Ottawa law professor and public health activist David Sweanor said that sends the wrong message that e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes are the same thing.“Don’t just get involved in a moral panic that ends up subjecting smokers to a greater risk by keeping them smoking when they could move to something else,” he said.Ontario Associate Health Minister Dipika Damerla said the reason for the law is the lack of evidence on electronic cigarettes.NDP health critic France Gelinas said “every month that goes by, more and more youth pick up smoking by experimenting with e-cigarettes and then making the switch.” But a study from the UK, released on Tuesday, suggests e-cigarettes are not gateway inhalers to the real thing.
