Vireo is one of five companies in New York allowed to sell the marijuana-based drugs, including at its dispensary in downtown White Plains.“Red” marijuana oil, for instance, has the most psychoactive ingredient, which produces the euphoric feeling useful in treating pain.“Green” is far less psychoactive and has more of the marijuana compound being used to treat conditions such as epilepsy.“We started really slow, and I wasn’t experiencing any benefit and switched to a different color, and now I have all three different colors, and I find there are benefits to all of them,” Greenspan said.He takes the red for pain and insomnia, the yellow for nausea and green for seizure-like symptoms, though many benefits overlap among strains.CANNIBIS: New York hurdles prolong sufferingCONDITIONS: NY medical marijuana illnessesINSURANCE: NY program ripe for fraud, abuseHe spoke during an interview in the music studio at his home.Greenspan, an aspiring musician, started the business, Red Ivory Recordings, but has struggled amid his health problems,While Greenspan’s health has improved since starting marijuana in February, his treatment remains a work in progress as Vireo pharmacist Aashna Satija weighs the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient.“If I’m working or something in the day, obviously the red might make you a little bit more impaired, thinking-wise.

The green is not so much like that because the THC is very low,” Greenspan said.Satija and Dr. Stephen Dahmer, chief medical officer at Vireo, met with Greenspan earlier this month to discuss his marijuana use.They talked about how many times and how deeply he inhales the vapor, and laid out plans for varying the dosage of each strain.Dahmer noted much of the dosing is essentially trial and error because federal laws ban most medical research into the drug.Further complicating matters for marijuana pharmacists and doctors, the list of eligible illnesses in New York, including epilepsy, cancer and neuropathy, mostly consists of intractable conditions or, in other words, the ailments that traditional medicine already struggles to treat."Theseare patients that have tried everything and multiple times, and medicine has limits to it and we try our best," Dahmer said."That we see more of them here is a result of the conditions that qualify (for marijuana), and many patients have seen multiple doctors and been through the medical system."Still,

Greenspan is already using marijuana to replace some of his opioid painkillers and other drugs, though the weaning process is difficult and dangerous for such addictive pills."Iseem to find a lot more benefit from not taking as many pharmaceuticals like the pain meds, anxiety pills and that stuff on the autism side," he said."I have a goal of trying to get off the other stuff, and I would rather be on something more holistic than pharmaceutical."Vireo,which has an affiliate in Minnesota, has focused on transitioning marijuana patients away from prescription pain pills.The company cited federal research showing opioid abuse killed 14,000 people nationally in 2014 when announcing its plan this month to help combat the epidemic.Vireo is launching an internal study focused on reducing painkiller abuse among patients with intractable pain, but the effort is limited in New York’s program because intractable pain alone is ineligible for marijuana.“Patients deserve sound options when faced with pain and suffering,” Dahmer said.
